Our policy is to provide safe roads and footpaths.

We will do this by improving and maintaining effective and efficient street lighting and illuminated traffic signs.

This will help to improve environmental standards and community safety.

The new equipment that is installed as part of the Public Finance Intiative (PFI) contract will have significant benefits for the community, including:

• improved community safety and confidence
• reducing crime and the fear of crime
• helping to reduce road traffic accidents
• lighting of previously unlit back lanes
• better colour perception as a result of using modern 'white' lighting
• more environmentally friendly and energy efficient equipment.

The benefits of street lighting contribute towards community safety and link with the Community Safety Unit and Safe Newcastle.
