Who we are
A new team created during the Communication and Marketing Unit restructure which brings together the marketing staff previously spread across the council.
There are five people in the team – one marketing manager, three marketing officers and a graphic designer (working mainly for Neighbourhood Services).
What we do
We work with directorates to:
identify and understand their audiences and key messages
refine their product where necessary
develop and implement appropriate marketing campaigns
Marketing traditionally focused on services and events. Social marketing - the application of commercial marketing techniques to public health and other social issues with the aim of changing behaviour - is an increasingly important part of our work.

How we work
We provide a varied range of support depending on the service needs and resources.
The team’s main area of work is on major campaigns addressing Newcastle City Council priorities such as tackling teenage pregnancy; promoting fostering; the ourNewcastle environmental campaign; and the new city library.
We work with the services to identify:
We then devise an appropriate marketing campaign, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, which is set out in a marketing agreement agreed with the relevant services.
We expect to spend a total of around 450 hours working on major campaigns and 150 hours on medium campaigns.
We also provide a full marketing advice, guidance and media buying service for all departments. Other activities, such as service promotion, may be supported by the Corporate Communications Team.
Other services
Graphic design
We have a designer who provides design services for Neighbourhood Services and can advise on commissioning design.
Media bookings
We negotiate preferential rates with media and promotional companies and make all of Newcastle City Council’s advertising bookings. Statutory notices are handled by the Corporate Communications Team.
Promotional sites and stands
We manage Newcastle City Council’s promotional sites – such as the Civic Centre plasma screens - to maximise both the positive publicity for the council and the promotional opportunities available to Council services and events.
We also have a selection of corporate display stands and blank display stands which we loan out free of charge.
