Local information about South Jesmond

South Jesmond Ward contains Jesmond Metro station and is close to both the West Jesmond and Haymarket Metro stations, situated in neighbouring wards. The ward covers some of the city centre and is the location of the main campus for Northumbria University and Newcastle University’s John Robinson Library.

There are several schools in South Jesmond including Newcastle Royal Grammar School, Church High and Central High Schools for girls. Other schools in the ward are St Catherine’s RC Primary on Greystoke Avenue and the Northern Counties School on Great North Road.

South Jesmond contains a number of community facilities, including the Civic Centre Customer Service Centre on Barras Bridge, the City Hall and the City Baths on Northumberland Road. The Lord Mayor’s official residence, The Mansion House is also in the ward on Fernwood Avenue. The ward has easy access to the City Library on Princess Square while to the north of the ward Jesmond Library and swimming pool are within walking distance.

To the east of the ward are Jesmond Dene, Armstrong Park and Heaton Park. In 1883 Sir William Armstrong offered Jesmond Dene, the landscaped grounds to his house, to Newcastle City and this was incorporated with Armstrong Park. Facilities in the parks include Pets Corner, a bowling green with pavilion, tennis and basketball courts and also an informal football area with permanent five-a-side goal posts. There is also seating situated along shaded pathways throughout the parks.

To west of the ward is Brandling Village, and the Brandling and Exhibition Parks. The parks are separated only by the A167 which has a lit public underpass giving access from one park to the other. Both are formal Parks with attractive gardens. Brandling Park boasts an active bowling green with both ladies and men’s clubs which is open to the general public. Exhibition Park sits outside of the South Jesmond ward boundary and is part of the Wingrove ward. Brandling Park, the smaller of the two parks, is situated to the east of the A167 with Clayton Road being the north boundary of the park. Like many City parks, Brandling was recovered from the Town Moor and completed in 1878. The Brandling family (after whom the park was named) played a leading role in Newcastle life for 450 years acting as mayors, businessmen, M.P’s, landowners and mineowners. It was the disastrous explosion at the Brandling’s Felling Colliery in 1812 that led to the invention of the miner’s safety lamp.

South Jesmond is to the north east of the city centre. The boundary commences at the intersection of Ouseburn Road and Benton Bank and bears west across the Armstrong Bridge, along the weir until reaching Stotes Hall. It then heads south on to Jesmond Dene Road and continues west to Shortridge Terrace along Buston Terrace, north along Manor House Road then west at Fern Avenue to Osborne Road. The boundary runs around Haldene Court to the Newcastle Church High School up to Tankerville Terrace then bears west to the Great North Road, on through St. Andrew’s & Jesmond Cemetery. It then travels south along the Great North Road to the Haymarket War Memorial and turns east along St Mary’s Place, then south along John Dobson Street to Durant Road. The boundary turns east along Durant Road to the Manors roundabout and north along the A167 to Sandyford Road before heading east along Sandyford Road to Portland Road, and then south along Portland Road to Warwick Street. It proceeds east along Warwick Street to Newington Road, heads north along Newington Road and then east along Stratford Grove West. It then continues to the rear of the properties on Stratford Grove Terrace and along Stratford Road to Ouseburn Road. Finally the boundary continues along Ouseburn Road back up to the intersection with Benton Bank.
