Ouseburn ward was created following the Ward Boundary review of 2004. It includes the majority of the former Sandyford ward.
The ward includes 5 distinctive ‘neighbourhoods’.
- Quayside (including Ouseburn valley)
- St. Ann’s and Battlefield
- Shieldfield
- Lower Heaton
- Jesmond Vale.
The ward is characterised by a mix of Victorian flats and terraces in the areas of Jesmond Vale and Lower Heaton. Mixed tenure property with a high proportion of local authority housing is located in the areas of Shieldfield, Battlefield and St. Ann’s. The ward includes many recent major developments of flats and mixed use developments on the Quayside and incorporates a bustling social and music scene along the river and in Ouseburn Valley.
The ward also contains 5 major student accommodations. Three of these are sited within the neighbourhood of Shieldfield (Camden House, Glenamara House, and Stephenson Building).
Garth Heads and the recently completed student and key worker accommodation at Quaypoint are located in Battlefield, south of New Bridge Street.
Shieldfield Community Housing Office on Clarence Walk provides tenants of Your Homes Newcastle with a variety of functions and services including reporting and monitoring of repairs to council properties. Although not within the Ouseburn Ward boundaries, residents are within close proximity to the Civic Centre Customer Service Centre at Barras Bridge, and for those in the east of the ward, the East End Community Service Centre on Shields Road and East End Pool and Library on Corbridge Street are easily accessible.
The metro station at Manors on New Bridge Street and Byker on Shields Road both provide rapid transport to and from the area.
Shieldfield Community Nursery and three primary schools, Christ Church, Hotspur Primary and St Theresa’s are situated in the ward.
The ward is well served with ‘open’ green spaces such as the City Stadium, Ouseburn Valley, Heaton and Armstrong parks and is also close to Jesmond Dene. Facilities in the parks include a bowling green and pavilion, tennis and basketball courts, and an informal football area and seating throughout.
Ouseburn is a very a diverse ward covering a large geographical area from Sandyford Road at the North to the Quayside of the River Tyne to the South, and from Heaton Road in the East to the City centre and the Central Motorway to the West.
