Within the Dene ward boundaries there are four schools including St Mary’s RC Comprehensive and Trinity School’s Deneview Site. There are also two primary schools, Cragside Primary School and Benton Park Primary School and the southern end of the ward lies close to Heaton Manor School. The ward is also the location of the Coach Lane campus of Newcastle University, government offices for the Department of Social Security and the Freeman Hospital.
The northern boundary of the ward is close to Longbenton metro station and the transport interchange at Four Lane Ends. Jesmond Dene lies in the south east of the ward and there is also a large park called Paddy Freeman’s on Freeman Road. The park contains a lake and has facilities including a bowling green and pavilion with an active membership of men and women. The green is open to the general public. There are two tennis courts available for public use and a fenced playground with safety surfaces. Play equipment consists of swings, slides, climbing units and spring toys. The nearest bus stops are on Freeman Road, adjacent to the park, while the nearest Metro station is at South Gosforth, approximately 1.5km north west of the park. There is limited free on site parking at Paddy Freeman’s park and a ticket controlled car park at nearby Castle Farm Playing Fields.
The backbone of the ward is the Coxlodge Wagonway, a cycle track/bridleway that runs through the entire ward from Hadrick’s Mill roundabout to the North Tyneside border. The ‘tram-track’ as it is known locally, is a popular facility used by dog walkers, horse riders and cyclists alike.
There are a number of privately owned leisure facilities in the ward including the David Lloyd Tennis Club, Novocastrians R.F.C., Heaton & Stannington F.C. and the University Playing Fields on Coach Lane.
The south of the ward is close to High Heaton Library which is located on Newton Road in the neighbouring ward of North Heaton. This city resource offers a number of community learning facilities and services.
Dene’s borders start from the north east edge of the ward, following the overall northern city boundary west until reaching the metro line at the rear of Gallalaw Terrace (west of Killingworth Road). It then heads south following the Ouseburn, past Haddricksmill Bridge and Dene Bridge (along the western edge of Jesmond Dene), down to Red Walk. It then turns east crossing Jesmond Dene to the Pond (which lies west of Freeman Road/ Jesmond Road). At the roundabout it heads east along Newton Road and continues east along Cragside to the Benton Road roundabout and to the rear of the properties on Cornel Road. At Cochrane Park sports ground it heads north and east around its boundary to Red Hall Drive/Coach Lane, then south along the eastern side of Red Hall Drive to Meridan Way. It then continues east along the north of Meridian Way turning south to the rear of numbers 2 to 46 Slingsby Gardens (which lies in the North Heaton ward) and onto the Coast Road, heading east past the front of the Wills Building to the East Coast Mainline. It then heads north, adjacent to the mainline, then turns east to the rear of the properties on Westminster Way to the junction with Coach Lane. It then continues north along Coach Lane turning west along Rosemont Way to the rear of Spalding/ Penfold and Dunlop Closes to Benton Road. Heading north along the east side of Benton Road to Four Lane Ends Metro station, it then follows the metro line back along to Gallalaw Terrace/ Killingworth Road.
