The Energy Centre has been established since the 1980s, providing energy management and advice services to the Council, Your Homes Newcastle and to Newcastle's residents. With an annual fuel and water spend of over £10 million (2006/2007) and utility prices constantly rising, Newcastle City Council needs not only to monitor and control its energy usage, but also reduce consumption to make financial and environmental savings.
The work of the Energy Centre is driven by the following key policy statement:
'The City Council will minimise the City's contribution to climate change by reducing energy and water consumption and by increasing renewable energy use.'
The Energy Centre has published an Energy Strategy driven by the above statement. The Strategy will be delivered via an Action Plan, which is presented under eight key aims.

The Energy Centre, based at Scottish Life House, is part of the Sustainability Unit, Neighbourhood Services in the Environment and Regeneration Directorate.
