Code of Conduct for Members - Complaints Process

Changes to the Complaints Procedure

From 8 May 2008 the responsibility for considering complaints that a councillor may have breached the Code of Conduct for Members is moving to the standards committees of local authorities.

What this means to you

After 8 May 2008 if you want to complain about the conduct of a member of Newcastle City Council or a member of one of our parish councils, you must submit your complaint to:

The Standards Committee
Newcastle City Council
c/o Mrs. V. A. Dodds, Monitoring Officer and Head of Legal Services
Civic Centre
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE99 2BN

Any complaint should be made using an appropriate complaint form which can be requested from the Council's Head of Legal Services or Head of Democratic Services at the above address.

The committee can only deal with complaints about the behaviour of a member. It will not deal with complaints about things that are not covered by the Members' Code of Conduct. If you make a complaint to the committee it must be about why you think a member has not followed the Code of Conduct.

Until 8 May 2008, the Standards Board for England remains responsible for carrying out this function. Please visit the Standards Board website for further information.
